NEWSLETTERS
BLANDFORD ALLOTMENT SOCIETY NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2010
Dear Members,
As I start this letter I see that it is raining and that the forecast for tomorrow is for a further 2 inches of rain. This is good news after the drought months, but on a recent walk around the sites it is evident that the weeds have responded to the rain and some plots are going to be a shock when their owners return from holiday!
By now you will have received your rent details for next year along with the new agreements. Please read the agreements carefully and note the new paragraphs added this year, particularly in relation to the cutting of the grass on the paths bordering your plot and the need to close the lids on the water troughs after you have finished using them. This is important for two reasons, namely child safety and the fact that those pesky birds that cause so much damage to your vegetables are attracted to the sites mainly because they see water! I have counted up to 40 birds sitting around the lip of an open trough in the early morning filling up before they then hop off to the nearest plot for breakfast!
If you have received your rent demand and have decided against keeping your plot next year, due to family circumstances or just that it is far harder and less rewarding work than you imagined, please return your rent invoice to the box in the shed at Lamperds Field , or post it to the Treasurer's address with a note explaining that you are going to resign in September. This will stop demands for overdue rent and also allow me to plan for occupation of the plot by someone from the waiting list as soon after rent day as possible.
You will have seen on your rent statement that the AGM is to be held in the Corn Exchange on Monday 27th September at 6-30pm. Saffron has asked me to remind you that we are holding the judging of the funniest (or rudest) vegetable competition, so don't forget to take a photograph of the offending item or bring it along for the members to judge and have a laugh about.
The King's Seeds catalogues for sowing in 2011 are in the shed at Lamperds Field and Norman has a supply for the Elizabeth Rd Site, so ask him for them. They offer you a 50% reduction in the retail price for seeds and a whole lot more for next year. They need to be completed by November and sent to Saffron our seed Secretary, or put into the box in the shed at Lamperds Field along with your cheque. If the supply has run out please contact Saffron on 480059 and she will arrange for more to be available in the shed.
Judging of the best plots and the Sunflower competition has been completed and prizes will be awarded at the AGM.
I hope to see you at the AGM.
Dick
